Historical Background
Sam Gabay came to America as a boy from Turkey via Ellis Island in 1905. As a young man in the 1920’s he began selling extras from garment factory floors in a pushcart on the Lower East Side. Soon thereafter, Sam negotiated relationships with local department stores, allowing him to resell their overstock. In 1940 he opened his first store at 1 St. Mark’s Place. In 1970, he and his sons moved the operations to 225 First Avenue, the store’s present location. Today, his two grandchildren, Joseph Gabay and Joel Morrow, run the business - the third generation of this family to do so.
